  • Turntables are now at Ramparts, but may need to arrange for PA speakers to be available. Martin will confirm with Celine.

patents discussion

Decided that it is probably best to start with showing the Stallman video (of his talk) to provide a background to the issues.

Martin will write up a list of topics that could be used to guide a discussion:

  • what types of applications and projects are likely to be affected by software patents, and how
  • who will patents benefit / damage
  • how do software patents relate to other patents
  • what is the history of (software) patents
  • how do software patents relate to intellectual property laws
  • who owns software patents
  • what role could the hacklabs play in respect of addressing patent and IP issues

plus links to resources

Would be good to have a knowledgeable speaker. Sash will contact Alex Hudson of the association for free software.

publicity

  • Sash and Martin will put together a text to send out to Schnews, mute, ntk, mailing lists, and for the Ramparts website
  • Ralph will see if he copy up the Hacklab leaflet for the event. Otherwise Martin will make some copies at a print shop.
  • Martin will contact Sara B to ask for help with flyer. Flyers to be distributed at Ramparts, Freedom, Gower St, LARC. Idea to slip flyers into IT books at bookshops.

preliminary event schedule

  • 3.30pm Gimp workshop
  • 5pm PC building workshop
  • 6pm Stallman movie, Patents discussion
  • 9pm Entertainment!
  • 2am close.

5: Date for next meeting.

1st May 05

6: Any Other Business.

Talk about doing regular events, eg every 3 months. Would be easier if we work out a routine for doing them, instead of doing one-offs. Next time we should publicise in Freedom magazine and Spitalfiends market.

Discussed whether Gower St computer space is/should be an 'official' hacklab.
